Tips and F.A.Q.’s about the studio sessions

What is the best outfit choice for our family?

Wear clothes that you and your family member would wear on any other day and feel comfortable in. Unless the photo shoot is to capture a special milestone, such as communion/confirmation and anniversaries, I would recommend wearing simple trousers, t-shirts/sweat shirts/tops as you would usually do. During the classic and extended sessions I might ask you to sit on the floor and maybe to rough and tumble for some fun candid shots, which would make it more difficult, if you wore formal clothing.

Should we all wear matching colours?

Not necessarily. It might look too uniform. While some families like the uniform look - and I am not totally against it, I would rather suggest to stick to a rough colour scheme of pastels and natural tones, such as beige/cream, pastel pinks, blues, greens etc. I would stay away from too dark colours, such as black or navy blue. Also try not to have any busy patterns or graphics, as they will take the focus away from your faces. Simple solid coloured clothes are the best. A combination of one item of clothing with matching colours, such as blue or beige trousers and then different pastel coloured tops work really well together.

Can we get photos taken in festive/seasonal outfits?

Of course! These are great for seasonal memories and for sending festive greetings to loved ones. But I do recommend wearing your normal outfits for most of the images and then changing into the seasonal costumes for a few extra images. This will allow you to choose images with your day to day outfits to hang on the wall all year long and have the festive images displayed and shared during that season.

Can our children bring any toys or stuffed animals along?

Yes, please! Your children should feel as comfortable in the studio setting as possible. If their favourite toy will help calming them and keep them occupied in-between poses. I also think having a few images of the child and their own stuffed animal or doll is a nice keepsake for the future - and maybe a sentimental image to be shared on their wedding day?!?
Any electrical toys - tablets, phones etc - can be used by the child while not photographing them, as well as used to play familiar videos/music in the background to keep them content.

What if my child is not cooperative during the photo shoot?

It happens almost every time, especially with younger children, that there are moments when they are just done with it and start to cry or disagree. We will then take a breather and see, if they calm down again and want to continue. I will never force any family to get through the shoot with upset children. Often it helps, if they can step asside and play for a bit or have a snack while I take images of the other family members. If the child can’t rejoin the shoot and we already have enough photos taken, we might finish the shoot a little earlier. In rare occasions if this happens at the beginning of the shoot and there is not much hope it will improve, I will offer to reschedule the shoot. Often the child wasn’t feeling well that day and just needed some TLC in a familiar surrounding, not the strange studio with that lady using the scary camera and flash lights on them.

I have a family member with additional needs? Can you accommodate them?

If you have a family member who needs any extra assistance or special requirements, please let me know when booking the photo shoot.
The entrance to the studio has a singular, tall step to get inside, which would be difficult to accommodate someone in an electric wheelchair. In this occasion, I might suggest to meet you at your home and have a photo shoot there where the person can enter and move around as they are used to.
If the family member has allergies to any regular household item, such as dust, pets, cleaning products, etc., I will prepare the studio and adjoining bathroom/changing room accordingly. Please note, the studio is attached to my home where I have a dog and cats, but they are staying in the main part of the house and won’t interfere with you and your family.
For people with neurodiverse conditions, please tell me how I can help making their experience as comfortable as possible.
Please note that flash lights are necessary indoors and could cause epileptic seizures or distress. If this is of concern, I would recommend doing an outdoor shoot where I either don’t need any flash or the flash light will not be as severe as in the studio.

Can we bring our pets to be included in some of the images?

Yes! I LOVE animals! I believe pets are part of the family and are very welcome to join the studio shoot. My own pets will be in the other part of the house, so they won’t bother you or your pet(s), maybe only my border collie Hailey might be barking at you through the window when you arrive.
If you don’t want the pet to be included in all images, it might be helpful, if they are okay to stay in the car or a carrier when not being included, as they might interrupt the rest of the photo shoot otherwise. Just let me know, if you have a pet snake or rat, just so that I can prepare myself and conquer my fear of them ;-)
